Hotel & Mercato, Palermo

This project was a response to the cultural and urban conditions of the old central city in Palermo.
In a worn-down, vaguely defined, city-space close to the historic harbour, I have introduced the dual program of hotel and market and tied them together creating a new unity and a space welcoming both locals and travellers.

A fresh food market exists on the ground level carving itself into the existing context and dividing the site into new market zones corresponding to types of produce.
The hotel hovers above in three clusters connected to the market zones as well as room class, lighting conditions and views.
The canopy structures form a spine and creates the central market area.

The market flows in and under the hotel and onto the 1st floor, thereby tying a knot and developing a closer relationship with the hotel in the form of a market piazza and a configurational conference room for finer market- and culinary events. Two central omnidirectional trattorias soak up visitors and locals forming new cultural meetings and exchanges.
